The Fitba adventure

Updated: 9 hours ago

A nation awaits. How do you think we'll get on against Germany tonight?

Of course, the last (and only other) time that Scotland played in the opening match of a major football tournament was in Paris in 1998, as we took on reigning champions Brazil in the opening match of the World Cup. We put up a really good fight but lost 2-1 – conceding a late own goal. Another heroic failure. So Scottish.

Talking of heroic failures, 1998 was also the year that myself and a few pals launched Fitba, a short-lived but much-loved Scottish football magazine. Like Scotland in the 1998 World Cup, we only managed three appearances before skulking away with our tails between our legs. However, even more entertaining than the magazine itself was the story behind it, featuring Hibs casuals, pots of stovies, Rod Stewart, a chain-smoking Scotty dog and loads more.

You can read all about it here!

Postscript

As you probably know, on the night, Germany beat Scotland 5-1. And even our goal was an own goal scored by the Germans.
